Employees Performing A Biohazard Cleaning? Why It Is Not A Good Idea.

Biohazard Cleaning in the Workplace

Why is it important not to have your employees performing a biohazard cleaning containing blood and bodily fluids?

Biohazards cause safety risks to the health of humans, the environment, and to animals. Blood-borne pathogens in blood and other bodily fluids spread viruses and bacterial infections including HIV, Hepatitis, MRSA and C-Diff. Several measures need to be taken prior to a biohazard cleaning in the workplace. The cleaning and removal of biohazards are highly regulated.

Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.1030 makes it clear that NO EMPLOYEE can be expected or required to clean up blood, bodily fluids or any biological contaminated areas without meeting the following requirements:

  • They have been formally trained in blood-borne pathogens.
  • You have a written blood-borne pathogen plan.
  • They have the proper personnel protective equipment available.
  • They have been offered the hepatitis B vaccine with a follow up visit.
  • You have provided them with the proper method to remove, store, and legally dispose of bio-hazardous waste.

Only after these steps are met, can an employee attempt to clean a biohazard scene having blood and bodily fluids present.

35,000 people are infected annually, an infected person may carry the virus for years before any symptoms appear.
